Minibasket Tournament: How Sport Can Be a Bridge to Unity, Tolerance, and Trust
As part of the program Together for the Common Good – Enhancing Citizens' Trust in Institutions and Building Resilient Communities, the sports field became a space of connection, understanding, and mutual respect.
In June 2025, a Minibasket tournament for children under 12 was held in Podgorica, bringing together more than 20 mixed teams of girls and boys. Over the course of five days, on five courts, children, their coaches, fans, and families demonstrated the values of team spirit, empathy, and cooperation.
The tournament was organized by the Basketball Club Morača, in partnership with the Capital City of Podgorica, and the program of the event also included a series of additional cultural and sports activities, with the aim of promoting the values of unity and social cohesion.
In this context, sport has been recognized as a powerful tool for strengthening interpersonal bonds and building trust. As a universal language that transcends cultural, gender, and social differences, sport creates a space in which divisions are erased, stereotypes are broken, and bridges are built between people.
The program Together for the Common Good uses sport, as well as other social and cultural activities, as a platform for empowering communities, especially those often excluded from social processes. The goal is to transform potentially negative patterns, such as mistrust in institutions, divided narratives, hate speech, and violence, into opportunities for connection, learning, and joint action.
The tournament was carried out in line with the principles of the UN initiative The GAME PLAN, a global plan of action against hate speech through sport, which promotes sport as a means of affirming inclusion, dignity, and peace. Through this and similar events, sport is affirmed as a space where differences do not divide, but enrich, and where the common rules of the game become the basis for a shared vision—a vision of the common good.
